A really good book abouth the mechanisms of the the self in late Modernity
The main focus of the book is how Modernity has influenced an individual's forming of a self identity.
It is argued that trust in particular plays a vital part in, not only forming, but maintaining a stable sense of self-identity. Trust in other people and surroundings help keep day to day challenges to the individual's sense of his/her self at bay, thereby keeping that sense stable.
A main point however concerns the reflexive nature of the self. Because of late modernity, external factors such as advertising and dominant TV shows can no longer just be ignore or blocked away by a protective cocoon formed by trust.
The individual is forced constantly to reflect upon his/her self-identity, and because of the constant search for trust, it puts forward the idea that the individual buys into certain forms of lifestyles, artificial created by the media, in order to 'fit in' and regain a form of security for the self.
This was not, to the same degree, the case in the pre modern world, primarily due to the lack of mass media, and is why this book has been written.

Foucault and Power
Here you will find an excellent examination on Michel Foucault's ideas of power. Gidden's postulates that 'institutional refelxivity' may be an appropriate term applied to Foucault's power hypothesis. This really amkes sense and challenges Terry Eagleton' ideas (in 'Ideology') which challenge Foucault.
This is the gem in Gidden's ouvre. You must investigate
The Essential Text
If you are interested in issues of gender identity and society, this text offers a comprehensive view concerning the influence of self reflexivity and intimacy. Giddens has influenced key writers such as Ken Plummer and Jeffrey Weeks in thier findings, relating to Plummer's ideas on 'intimate citizenship', and Week's investigations to same sex relationships. Furthermore its a great read - one of my favorite books!!
